A fashion industry vet like Norma Kamali is past the days of proving herself. She’s a woman who’s comfortable not only in her skin but in her aesthetic. Still each year she manages to put on an entertaining and creative show. Last year Norma Kamali showcased her collection via an oversized 3-D screen. This year she included the 3-D screen and upped the ante by using life-size model board cutouts to exhibit her fall 2012 collection.

It felt like we were in a scene of Honey I shrunk the kids when we entered Pier 59 Studios. We were turning around in circles with our heads up to the sky in awe of the life-size cutouts. The cutouts featured classic printed dresses, skirts, colored fur coats and stoles. This collection was clearly for the sophisticated working woman who needs clothes to carry her from the office to cocktails. There was an abundance of striped tops and dresses, animal print pants, and of course chic blazers. A Norma Kamali collection is never complete without her signature bathing suits. She managed to spawn a few into this collection. One of our favorites was an animal print bikini.
The clothes were accented with big brightly colored head bows. This collection reminded us a lot of her Walmart collection. It just looked so easily wearable and it offered universally flattering styles. It didn’t necessarily have a dramatic appeal but there were a few pieces that packed a punch like a red fur coat and a white sequin shift dress. Norma’s color palette was a mixture of red, black, and white. She chose her signature stretch jersey fabrics for dresses and wool for houndstooth skirts and printed knee-length coats. This was truly a collection for real everyday women.
